Apparently 'Metaverse' was coined in the book 'Snow Crash'.

My copy is on the way, anyone else read it?

Neal Stephenson's 1992 novel Snow Crash introduces a metaverse that appears to its users as an urban environment, developed along a 100-meter-wide road, the Street, that runs the entire 65536 km (216 km) circumference of a featureless, black, perfectly spherical planet. The virtual real estate is owned by the Global Multimedia Protocol Group, a fictional part of the real Association for Computing Machinery, and is available to be bought and buildings developed thereupon.

Here is a full run down, including the timeline

A metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. In futurism and science fiction, it is often described as a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a single, universal virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual and augmented reality headsets.
